Whenever the Nintendo 3DS needs to make an improvement in built-in software or add a new feature, it undergoes a system update. Below is a list of updates:

1. March 27th, 2011 (North America):

  • Initial release on 3DS
  • Improved system stability; many bugs fixed
  • Some of the ability to receive data has been extended
  • Improved network connectivity
  • A 3D demonstration video (a 3D version of the official White Knuckles music video by OK Go)

2. June 6th, 2011 (North America) and June 7th (Japan):

  • Nintendo eShop
  • Nintendo DSi™/Nintendo DSi XL™ software transfer
  • Nintendo 3DS Camera update
  • Removal of demonstration video
  • Improved system stability and overall performance
  • Addition of hotkeys for most touch-screen system buttons
  • SpotPass functionality in Sleep Mode
  • "Sleep Mode" button on menu shown after power button is pressed removed
  • "Software closed." message moved to touch screen
  • Ridge Racer 3D bug that forces the user to power the 3DS off and then back on
  • Blocks flash cards

3. June 15th, 2011 (North America)::

  • A correction for the screen freeze symptom experienced in the Ridge Racer 3D game.
  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments to enhance user experience.
  • You can receive automatic updates when a wireless internet connection is available. When the download is complete, you will receive a dialog on the HOME Menu detailing the steps to install the update.

4. November 13th, 2011 (Bundled with Super Mario 3D Land):[1]

  • Allows players to join in online games that friends are playing using the Friends List
  • Improves system security
  • Blocks flash cards

6. December 21, 2011:

  • Minor update which improves StreetPass Mii Plaza application
  • Minor improve to the overall system performance

  • Ability for Nintendo and third-party developers to be able to patch physical games
  • Ability to create folders on the HOME Menu to organize games and applications, and hold up to 60 items and be named
  • Improved and redesigned Nintendo eShop

  • Ability for a system update to take place without the need of a parental control pin

9. June 27, 2012: [10]

  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments

10. July 24, 2012:

  • Future improvements to overall stability on the Nintendo eShop and other minor adjustments

11. September 19, 2012:

12. December 4, 2012:

  • Ability to perform Sleep Mode downloads of purchased titles while the Nintendo eShop is running

  • Fixed an error that prevented some users from launching the System Settings, Nintendo eShop or Game Notes after an error message was displayed during the system update process
