At launch, the Nintendo 3DS was available in two colors: Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black. Other colors were publicized, but did not initially make it to the market. Some others have hit the market through the 3DS's lifespan.

They were given away as part of a contest in Japan. Nintendo of Europe also announced that they would be having the same contest per their Club Nintendo which customers will be able to enter by registering two 3DS games. Nintendo of Australia also announced they were doing this same thing. Weirdly, they only made 50 of each model unlike other regions which had 1,000 made each model. [28]
