Pokédex 3D

Pokédex 3D is an application for the Nintendo 3DS. It was released June 6th, 2011 in North America and the following day in Japan to coincide with the launch of the Nintendo eShop, which it can be downloaded from for free. It allows the player to view Pokédex entries of 153 Pokemon from Pokémon Black and White.

An updated version, known as Pokédex 3D Pro was announced on April 21, 2012 in a Nintendo Direct conference, and includes Pokémon from previous generations of the series. This was released on July 14, 2012 in Japan, November 8 in North America, and will be released fall 2012 in Europe, and replace the original app, which was taken off the eShop June 17 in Japan, and October 1 in North America. ^[1] ^[2] ^[3] ^[4] ^[5]

In late January, Iwata announced that Nintendo is working on "various projects" for the Wii and Nintendo 3DS regarding the Pokémon franchise. ^[6]

President of Nintendo of Japan Satoru Iwata later reconfirmed the game, saying the following: ^[7]

Naturally, we expect 3D viewing to become one of the attractions when the new Pokémon title is released on Nintendo 3DS, but a number of other attractions, which do not depend upon the 3D aspect, shall also be realized. I have no hesitation about the prospect that a Pokémon-franchise title will be released for Nintendo 3DS.

”

Fans of the series have speculated what the game will be about, wondering if it shall be a main game like the recently released Black and White, or a spin-off like the classic Pokémon Snap. Previous to the announcement of this games, rumors were floating around that the aforementioned "Pokémon Black and White" had some enhanced functionality when played on the 3DS ^[8] though this was later proven false. ^[9]

Japanese magazine "Dengeki" has published an article stating that a new Pokémon game is in the works, which many fans believe is the 3DS game. Full details are expected to be revealed in the magazine's May 21 issue. ^[10] This was later revealed to be an unrelated Japan-only Pokemon arcade game.

Another Japanese magazine, CoroCoro, has stated that they will reveal full details of a new Pokémon game in their June 15th issue. ^[11] This game was revealed to be Pokémon Rumble Blast.

Pokédex 3D was officially announced on May 31st, 2011 as an app for the eShop that allows you to view Pokémon, as Iwata had said. ^[12]

Gameplay[]

Pokédex 3D is a free application that allows you to view over 150 Pokémon from Pokémon Black and White, along with details about those Pokémon and their moves. There are only sixteen Pokémon in your Pokédex at first; more can be obtained by scanning in new entries via QR codes, trading data with friends, or receiving three Pokémon a day per SpotPass. There is also an augmented reality mode that lets you take photos of Pokémon in the real world using the AR question block card.

An update for the application later released updated the AR viewer so you could now throw apples at your Pokémon (and they would eat it), a stop watch, and music to make your Pokémon sing. It also gave the ability to pause during a Pokemon's animation.
